4 Common Mistakes a Business Makes.

May 31, 2011 · Posted in Business · Comments Off

Facepalm.

If you are just starting a new company there are a few simple rules you should abide by. Everyone makes these mistakes at one point, even though they seem like common sense to someone outside of the box.

Rule #1 – No free rides.

You should make certain that you have a contract with your signature and your clients, complete with a date and time stamp because if you don't you have no grounds to reclaim your lost funds should they decide to stiff you.

More often then not customers will make promises to pay you and then they never do. It's important that you establish a clear line of communication. If you are offering a product or service don't full fill your obligation until you have at least half of the money in hand.

It's a sad fact that they could appear to be the most trustworthy people on the planet and then turn around and rip you off. You hear a lot of stories about businesses ripping off clients but from what I have seen it is quite often opposite that.

Rule #2 Get your contract in writing.

If you have been paid in full you have to make sure you have lived up to every obligation you have in writing. You don't have to go above in beyond unless you really want to. But the stuff on paper has to be done properly. Otherwise the client has every right to sue you or get your service or product for free.

Rule #3 Do the job right the first time.

Time lines are another extremely important law. If you say you will have it done in a week then make sure you have it done in a week. The same goes for your customer. If they promise to pay you in a week and then they don't, you had better still have their computer if you were working on it, because more then likely you are not going to see the money otherwise.

Rule #4 Borderline harassment.

A reminder call to a customer is one thing. But excessive calling is considered harassment. You will sometimes see customers that call you four times a day too. When this happens you might want to ask yourself if you really want to get into a monetary relationship with them. Maybe it would be better to give them back their computer and money then just say the heck with it. Odds are they are just going to complain even after you have fixed it. They are fishing for free stuff that's all. Not worth it.

Checking a business with The Better Business Bureau.

May 5, 2011 · Posted in Business · 1 Comment

If you are going to spend money with a company, check to make sure it is fair and legitimate.

With so much widespread access to the internet these days, it's almost necessary to have your company listed with the Better Business Bureau. This works out wonderfully for consumers as well. Regardless of what type of service or products you are intending on getting from a company, searching for them on the BBB is a sure fire way to get a sound understanding of how they practice their trade. This organization ranks businesses on a graded scale so you can see exactly what they are up to. The more complains there are, the lower their score will be. Most of the time when someone complains on the BBB web site about a company, said company will try to negotiate with a customer to solve any problems and close the case on the site. Myself, I had a problem with HP. They sold me a lemon laptop. a DV6000z to be precise. The laptop burned up over 6 times. I kept having to send it into them, then wait to get it back. They even tried to say I caused water damage when they sent it back and I opened it up and it was still broken. Anyway I filed a complaint on the BBB site and eventually it got taken care of. Someone from the HP corporate office negotiated with me to get my report closed. I ended up selling the junk laptop because it was well, junk. I won't buy from them again.
